AIR (Acknowledge and Institutionalize Responsibility) is a framework for people in the cannabis industry to proactively engage systemic racism and historic inequity.
Over half of American states allow for some form of a regulated cannabis market. This approach replaces costly drug policy that disproportionately harms historically marginalized communities. Therefore, regulated cannabis policy should frame the wealth generating potential of cannabis trade with a strong consideration for the historical injustices that preceded it.
The unique dynamics of cannabis markets present an opportunity to implement, test, and replicate socially responsible policy and business practices with characteristics of restorative justice, intersectionality, participatory freedom, and stakeholder theory. Further research into topics of corporate social responsibility, drug policy, trade associations, non-profits, and cause related marketing can reveal ways in which cannabis entities should invest in dialogue and cooperative action with the communities they operate in.
